Peter Maybury
Since completing a Masters in Graphic Design in 1992 Peter has worked as an artist, graphic designer, musician and educator. His freelance practice spans over 25 years during which he has collaborated extensively with creative practitioners and institutions, editors, and curators, on more than 150 individual artists publications, and over 50 group show publications for clients in Ireland, Belgium, Luxembourg, UK, US, Italy and Canada. This includes artist's monographs, artist's books, exhibition display, wayfinding systems, collection and event-specific publications (print and digital), academic and critical content, and this work has been featured in key design publications including Blueprint, Creative Review, and Emigre magazines.
His music has been released internationally on the following labels: Emigré Music (US); Sub Rosa (BEL); and Fällt (NI); Osaka (IRL); and C/F (NI).
His film works include Landfall (2020), a dual-screen film installation work, originally commissioned by Thisispopbaby’s festival for for Where We Live, St. Patrick’s Day Festival; Drape (2019) commissioned by Element Pictures for Pálás Cinema, Galway; A Study (2015) made for exhibition at ETH Zurich; and These Islands, Ballysadare, Co. Sligo (2017), screened at Architecture at the Edge, NUI, Galway; and These Islands, Slievemore, Dooagh, Keel East, Co. Mayo (2013); first shown at The Everyday Experience, film installation, Irish Museum of Modern Art.
He curates the on-going Messages Sonores sound art project, which has included a collaboration with improvising musician Toshimaru Nakamura. With Dennis McNulty he co-curated the Underground exhibition, Dublin, 2008, and he has an on-going collaborative practice with Tom dePaor which emerges from the disciplines of architecture, design, digital film, installation, public art, text, curation and landscape. Peter’s Gall Editions imprint has published 12 titles including Reservoir which describes Temperance (T. dePaor, P. Maybury [2010]); the five volume unbound book of de Blacam and Meagher for the 2010 national Pavilion, Venice Biennale, the book Of, which addresses the curation of that exhibition; and Notations, an eight volume publication co-edited with Paul Clarke and including work by Tom dePaor, O’Donnell Tuomey, and Grafton Architects. Peter recently published and co-edited Throw Away, a comprehensive survey book of nightclub flyers from the 1990s.
Peter has lectured widely including eight years as Visiting Lecturer at DLIADT, and four years with the MSc in Multimedia in Trinity College Dublin. From 2011-14 Peter was External Examiner at Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT). Peter was a main stage speaker at Offset (Dublin, 2015), and he has presented lectures at amongst others UCD and DIT, Dublin; University of Chester and Sheffield Hallam University. Peter lectures in Visual Communication at TU Dublin School of Art & Design. He is current External Examiner for the MA in Graphic Design at Bath Spa University.
