A grid of images decorates the cover. Extending to the book’s interior, the page is evenly divided into 4 x 4 units, the rectangles further divided with text margins. With such a quantity of varied material the grid generates not only uniformity but complexity and idiosyncrasy. On this, Robert Irwin differentiates between logic and reason, favouring reason as “… the processing of our interface with our own subjective being.”* A grid implies that logic is at work, but as is noted in Of, a later book, “ultimately page layout is determined by taste, intuition, reference, convention, form, white space and the inner dynamics of an image.”
